SAARC countries declares 2006 Tourism Year

South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation ( SAARC ) member countries which recently concluded its 13th Summit in Dhaka has declared 2006 as South Asia Tourism Year.

Leaders from member countries recognize the importance of tourism and the need to promote tourism in the region. Tourism ministers from member states are to meet and agree on activities to be undertaken during the year.

The SAARC region has attracted international tourists in search of rich civilization, unique cultural diversity, cuisine, extremely diverse geography, splendid archaeological monuments, and historic religious sites.

The SAARC countries comprise original members Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan has been accepted as the newest member.
